Once merely slaves of the elves, the hobgoblins now sit in a respected position as the standing armies of the elven Ark-Cities, their fierce loyalty to their masters granted them their freedom, such a gift given more out of simple efficiency than any real kindness, it was found there was no point keeping their soldiers in chains if they never tried to escape. Hobgoblins are famed for their discipline and militaristic nature, their days when “on campaign” spent drilling for battle, formation marches and constructing fortifications. When not on active military duty, it is not uncommon for bands of hobgoblins to leave the ark cities and hunt down bandits and monsters for the thrill of victory, or to hunt down escaped slaves for the thrill of the chase.
Naturally competitive and fearless, hobgoblins find themselves driven mad with boredom if left without a task, other people finding them almost insanely industrious. When on they march and their elven masters are too tired to go any further, it is common for them to spend the evening constructing a earthen fortification around the camp to protect it from assault, then tearing it down in the morning before they leave.
Burly and muscled, hobgoblins stand a few inches shorter than the average human, and their long arms, thick torsos, and relatively short legs give them an almost apelike stature. Hobgoblins’ skin is a sickly gray-green that darkens to mossy green after long exposure to the sun. Their eyes burn fiery orange or red, and their broad faces and sharply pointed ears give their features a somewhat feline cast.
Hobgoblin Racial Traits
+2 Dexterity, +2 Constitution: Hobgoblins are fast and hardy.
Goblinoid: Hobgoblins are humanoids with the goblinoid subtype.
Medium: Hobgoblins are Medium creatures and have no bonuses or penalties due to their size.
Normal Speed: Hobgoblins have a base speed of 30 feet.
Darkvision: Hobgoblins can see in the dark up to 60 feet.
Intimidating: Hobgoblins gain a +4 to intimidate checks. Hobgoblins fearless nature means that they have needed to develop a natural skill of intimidation to threaten each other with.
Fearless: Hobgoblins gain a +4 against fear and despair effects. Also, once per day, after a natural roll of 1 on a d20 roll, hobgoblins may reroll and use the second result.
Indefatigable: Hobgoblins gain Diehard and Endurance as bonus feats.
Languages: Hobgoblins begin play speaking Common and Elven. Hobgoblins with high Intelligence scores can choose from the following: Draconic, Dwarven, Infernal, Giant, and Orc.
